What Is Static Electricity
Static electricity is an electrical charge at rest, created by an imbalance of electrons on a surface or in the surrounding air. That imbalance sets up an electric field capable of influencing nearby objects u2014 and how much charge builds up depends on the materials involved, contact/separation speed, humidity, and several other factors.
Field Induction
Any charged object carries an electric field around it. If an ungrounded sensitive device enters that field, a charge is induced on the device u2014 and the resulting surge of charge transfer between the two can permanently damage the device's electrical characteristics.
Triboelectric Charging
The most common source of static: two materials separating after contact or rubbing transfer electrons between them. This can happen between almost any pair of materials u2014 solids, liquids, even airborne particles u2014 which is why ESD control has to account for far more than just handling components directly.
Wrist Straps
A properly worn and grounded wrist strap keeps the human body near ground potential, giving accumulated charge a safe path to dissipate rather than discharging suddenly into a sensitive device.
ESD Garments
Clothing matters more than it seems, especially in dry environments. Grounded static-control garments reduce the electrostatic field a person's own clothing can otherwise build up and carry into a protected area.
Ionizers
Grounding straps and mats only drain charge from conductive paths u2014 they do nothing for insulators like plastic housings or glass. Ionizers neutralize static on those non-conductive surfaces by flooding the air with balanced positive and negative ions.
ESD Packaging
Once a component leaves the protected area, packaging becomes its main defense. Shielding bags, conductive bags, and ESD-safe totes and boxes are engineered to block outside electrostatic fields and prevent a direct discharge path from reaching the product inside.
ESD Flooring & Footwear
Dissipative flooring paired with conductive footwear gives the body a continuous grounding path while walking u2014 important anywhere personnel move frequently through a protected area.
ESD Workstations
At the bench, grounded worksurfaces, mats, grounding cords, and clear signage work together so every point a component touches during handling or assembly stays within safe limits.
