What Is a Cleanroom

A controlled environment engineered to limit airborne particles, along with temperature, humidity, and air pressure, to levels suitable for sensitive manufacturing u2014 from electronics assembly to pharmaceutical production.

ISO Classification

Cleanrooms are most commonly classified under ISO 14644-1 (ISO Class 5, 7, 8, and so on) or the legacy Federal Standard 209E (Class 100, 10,000, etc.), based on the maximum permitted concentration of airborne particles at a given size.

Airflow & Filtration

HEPA and ULPA filters remove the vast majority of airborne particles down to a specified size, while the airflow pattern u2014 laminar or turbulent u2014 determines how effectively particles are swept away from the work area rather than recirculated.

Gowning Procedure

A room's filtration only protects it if what u2014 and who u2014 enters is controlled just as carefully. Consistent gowning procedure keeps personnel from being the largest uncontrolled particle source in the room.

Material Transfer

How materials and tools move in and out of a cleanroom matters as much as air filtration u2014 pass-throughs, cleaning protocols, and low-particle packaging all reduce what gets tracked in.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Low-particle wipers, mops, and cleaning agents formulated not to leave residue or outgas are essential to keeping a classified room within spec between audits.
